Wake on LAN application on Linux NAS

What is Wake on LAN? Wake on LAN is an application that can turn on a computer that is under sleep or turn off mode by another online device.

Can separate in two ways: [Wake on LAN] and [Wake on WAN].

This post will introduce you how to set up [Wake on LAN] application on PN-401, let it can be turned on by online.

After all the settings completed, we can use Windows 10 computer and application-specific software to wake up PN-401.

If your computer does not have Windows 10 OS, please refer to Wake on LAN Introduction.

Precautions before starting※

  • [Wake on LAN] application must be matched, and support magic packet and router bind by ARP, or you cannot use [Wake on LAN] function.
  • Can only use [Wake on LAN] under the regular turn off process (Ex: click “Turn off NAS” on the PDM or press the power button on the PN-401).
  • If there is a power failure and the power restore or the power is pulled up and reconnected. This feature will not be available to use.

Wake on LAN application – Confirm PN-401 Settings Value

First, we have to confirm the PN-401’s settings value can work for [Wake on LAN]. Please go to PDM [Settings> System Management] NIC1 and NIC2’ s MAC address.

Then go to PDM [Settings> Network Management> IP Settings]. In this demo, we take NIC 1 as example, MAC address: xx:xx:xx:xx:af6; IP address: 192.168.50.230; Default Gateway: 192.168.50.1

Actual setting value is depending on your network environment; wrong settings may cause a NAS connection problem, if you don’t know how to set up, please contact your network environment manager.

NOTE: NIC1 correspond to Network 1 settings; NIC2 correspond to Network 2 settings.

Please connect PN-401 to screen then restart, press [F2] entering to BIOS, use keyboard direction key move to [Advanced] page, confirm [Wake-Up by Lan] has been set as [Enabled].

You can use direction key move to [Wake-Up by Lan] and click [Enter] to change the setting value.

After setting process completed, please move to [Exit] page, and select [Exit Saving Changes], press [Enter] and select [Yes] to save changes and exit.

After exit BIOS, OS will restart. Enter into the system and click the left-down corner icon and select [Power off system] to turn off PN-401.

Wake on LAN Settings

Now, we are going to set up [Wake on LAN], please use Computer that has Windows 10, download and install software we are going to use to wake up NAS: [Wake On Lan GUI].

NOTE: This software only suitable for Windows OS, for more information, please refer to Download Page, the user can also choose other Wake on LAN software they like.

Open [Wake On Lan GUI] and enter the following values, make sure all the values are correct then click [Wake Up].

MAC Address NIC 1 MAC address
Internet Address NIC 1 IP address
Subnet Mask 255.255.255.255
Send Options Internet
Remote Port Number User-defined

When you hear [Beep] voice and see the PN-401 light is on, then it means [Wake on LAN] process is successful.

Wake on WAN Settings

Now, we are going to set up [Wake on WAN], this function is to turn on NAS by DDNS. Please make sure your NAS DDNS works, if you haven’t set up any DDNS, please refer to the link.

Entering to router settings page, and add a rule at the virtual server column, please enter the following information then click [Apply to this page settings].

NOTE: Each router settings page is all different, please refer to your own router’s user manual.

Service Name User-defined, in this sample, it should be NAS-WOL
Communication Port Range User-defined, in this sample, it should be 1234
Local IP NAS IP address, in this sample, it should be NAS IP address 192.168.50.230
Local Communication Port Same as [Communication Port Range], in this sample, it should be 1234

Open [Wake On Lan GUI] software, and enter the following values, then press  [Wake Up]. If  PN-401  can be turn on by turn off mode, then it means the settings is successful.

MAC Address NIC1 MAC address
Internet Address NIC1 DDNS address
Subnet Mask 255.255.255.255
Send Options Internet
Remote Port Number Enter communication port you have set up at the router. In this sample, it should be 1234
