Data Safety – Is it safe to put your files on online cloud drive?

In the previous post, is it safe to put your files on online cloud drive? part 1

Is it safe to put data on a place that data can be access by others?

It does point out some problems with the online cloud drive.

However, surely that some people would want to know “Is the famous brand online cloud drive terrible?”, “How can we improve the data protection?”

Don’t worry, in this post will continue to explain to you.

Famous brands’ online cloud drive data safety

Famous brands’ online cloud-based drives are well known for their convenience and universality.

However, we also know that cloud-based hard drives are not 100% trustworthy.

So, we can still use this handy tool by paying attention to the following points:

  1. Because it can’t guarantee stable operation for 24 hours, so be sure to prepare a copy of your data on another platform or device.
  2. Because the uploaded data may be leaked or analyzed, so please do not upload confidential information or private information to online cloud drives.

Data Safety Reminder: do not put all eggs in the same basket.

We all know that “investment and wealth management has gains and losses,” but what about the data information?

Those files and materials in the computer are our accumulation of work, the memories of life, or personal hobbies.

A slight mistake may cause lose those files. So in this year of that almost everyone using computers / mobile phones/tablets, we must store our precious data at least more than two places, such as cloud storage server (NAS), flash drives, etc.

Also, remember not to put them in the same place to avoid any disasters happened. Alternatively, those two file copies will be destroyed at the same time.

So you may want to ask, where can we put our another file copy? Because we want to prevent others from peeking our data at the same time, it is recommended to use a device with encryption protection or can set up a password.

Then put that device in a trusted place such as home, company, or even small warehouse, safe deposit box, etc.

Data Safety - Is it safe to put your files on online cloud drive?

ITE2 NAS – a perfect tool for your data safety

ITE2 NAS is a cloud storage server developed by ITE2 Technology.

Different from other NAS brands, it applies Windows 10 operating system, so you can quickly get started without knowing what cloud storage or NAS is.

ITE2 NAS built-in two sets of hard drive trays for hard drive data synchronization. After all, both hard drives and flash drive may have unexpected failures.

Data synchronization can reduce the risk of data loss caused by one hard drive damage.

The extremely power-saving function only takes 19W in a standby mode, which is almost equal to the one bulb’s power consumption.

Is it safe to put your files on online cloud drive?

On March 13, 2019, Taiwan had faced the most severe crash of Google. Many users said that “I need to send e-mail to customers now!”, “I cannot download my data on Google drive!”

In recent years, various network cloud storage services have been in trouble at least once.

So it is time for us to think – is it safe to put our files on the online cloud drive?

Free online cloud drive, yes or no?

When we upload our data to the online cloud drive or the cloud platform, it means that we agree with their policy.

When more files are uploaded, the more we will be kidnapped by their online cloud drive.

Like the cloud photo platform – Flickr. In 2018, they changed their policy of the original free user’s 1 TB space only to give you 1,000 photos space.

In February 2019, they automatically deleted photos that are over space. If you are a user that had stored 1 TB of photos, let’s just assume each photo takes 1 MB, so 1 TB can save more than 1 million photos, which is nearly mission in possible to backup them back to your own space?

Therefore, when we upload our data to these “free” cloud drive or online platform, we must pay attention to know when it comes to any change, it will take a certain amount of time to seek new online could drive resources.

Famous brand’s online cloud drive, yes or no?

According to the cloud drive status recorded and provided by Google, there are two crushes with the online drive this year, 1/19 and 3/13, respectively.

Therefore, the famous brand cannot be safe, too. No one can guarantee that you can access your data for 24 hours.

(Source: https://www.google.com/appsstatus)

Moreover, have you seen the online cloud storage terms of service?

Take Google as an example; in Google terms of service; it states that Google has the right to let the system analyze online cloud drive’s content.

We have uploaded our essential files to an online cloud drive, but we don’t know who and when can access these contents without any notice?

Is it safe to put your files on online cloud drive?

Also, famous brand’s online cloud drive is often the target of hackers. In September 2018, Facebook leaked at least 40 million accounts due to service vulnerabilities.

If these accounts have stored private photos on Facebook, without any immediate correction, then there is a great chance that these photos may be accessed by hackers.

However, “Is the famous brand’s online cloud drive really bad?”, “How can we really improve our data protection?”

Stay tuned and found out on the next part!

In Windows 10 NAS vs. Public Cloud? Which one is better? In part 1.

Windows 10 NAS vs. Public Cloud?

We have compared speed, public cloud service limitation, and security.

In part 2, we will compare Windows 10 NAS’s price, diversity to public cloud services.

Windows 10 NAS vs. Public Cloud – Price

Say, if a normal consumer only needs to back up their phone photos and computer data in the company or at home. Let’s say they choose Google One, 10TB (3,300 dollars/month) plan will cost a total of 39,600 dollars a year. If they choose to buy a Windows 10 NAS, the total will be 38,979 dollars to buy a non-Wi-Fi version NE-201 and two 10 TB NAS dedicated hard drives.

In other words, if a customer can use NE-201 for more than one year, it will be more cost-effective than using public cloud services. Moreover, the Windows 10 NAS and NAS hard drive all have warranty at least 2 years. Now you know which should choose, right?

 plan Total    plan Total
Google One
10 TB Cloud hard drive plan
3,300 dollars/ month ITE2 NAS 18,999 dollars
10 TB NAS hard drive 9,990 dollars
10 TB NAS hard drive 9,990 dollars
  39,600 dollars/year   38,979 dollars/year

If we want to calculate the part that includes electricity and other equipment costs further, we have designed the following scenarios for your reference. However, first, we need to calculate the cost that list of all details.

Public Cloud 10 TB Each month plan 3,300 dollars
NAS Two-year amortization cost
(With two 10 TB hard drives)

18,999 dollars + 9,990 dollars + 9,990 dollars=38,979 dollars

38,979 dollars/24 months=
About 1,625 dollars

Each month electricity cost 720 hours × 19.5 W = 14.04 kWh 14.04 kWh × 2.1dollars =
About 30 dollars
Router Two-year amortization cost 1,000 dollars/24 months=
About 42 dollars
Each month electricity cost

720 hours × 10 W = 7.2 kWh

7.2 kWh × 2.1dollars =
About 15 dollars

Network Cost  Month rent cost (100M/100M) 1,299 dollars
Each monthly electricity costs

720 hours × 7 W = 5.04 kWh

5.04 kWh × 2.1dollars =
About 11 dollars

Mobile Phone Fee 6GB plan (Each monthly costs) 399 dollars
Unlimited data plan (Each monthly costs) 599 dollars

※The above costs are estimated and actual values may vary by brand.

Then we divide the situation in two and compare the amount that had spent according to the cost listed above.

The 【Backup plan that you don’t have internet in your home 】

Backup by public cloud with mobile phone unlimited data plan

The user directly uses unlimited data plan and backup data to the public cloud at any time.

Each monthly cost →3,300 dollars+599 dollars=3,899 dollars

Backup by Windows 10 NAS with a mobile phone only has a 6GB plan

Because of the data limitation factor, users will not use a public cloud that will consume their mobile phone data for backup. In this case, the user can choose to install the router and a Windows 10 NAS at home, and access and backup data through the intranet. Then there will be no data problems at all!

Each monthly cost →1,667 dollars+30 dollars+15 dollars+399 dollars=2,111 dollars

The 【Backup plan that you have internet in your home】

Backup by public cloud

The user uses the internet and backup directly to the public cloud.

Each monthly cost →3,300 dollars+599 dollars+11 dollars=3,910 dollars

Backup by Windows 10 NAS

When the user has internet at home, they can not only backup data to Windows 10 NAS at home, but also can backup data no matter where they are after setting up DDNS.

Each monthly variety cost→ 1,667 dollars + 30 dollars+15 dollars + 1,299 dollars + 11 dollars = 3,022 dollars

In summary, no matter which backup scenario you use, the cost of using NE-201 backups must be more cost-effective than using the public cloud services.

Do you think 10 TB is too much capacity? NE-201 also has the function of sharing space. You can help your family, friends or colleagues to create accounts and set the usage capacity. Share NE-201 space, and each account all have their separate permissions and independent use without interfering with each other.

Windows 10 NAS vs. Public Cloud?

Windows 10 NAS vs. Public Cloud – Diversity

NE-201 also has many different applications. For example, the user can directly back up the system image file of other computers to the NE-201, so that the files and system data of that user’s computer can be easily backed up through the NE-201.

Windows 10 NAS vs. Public Cloud?

If the user wants to build a personal website or a company website but doesn’t know what to do. Not to mention just take a look at the web code, workstation programs, servers, etc. Don’t worry, NE-201 provides a mobile website erection function, which can allow the user to complete the website set up, from the application to the installation in a few simple steps. The user doesn’t need to learn the code, just simply set the name, type the content, upload the image, and you are finished building a website!

Windows 10 NAS vs. Public Cloud?

So which one should I choose? NE-201 or Public Cloud?

The public cloud service is only suitable for temporary backup of small a mounts of data (for example 10 GB). If you want to back up data at a long-term and have large-volume, also, the file content does not change a lot. Then we recommended using NE-201 for backup, not only because of the lower cost but also because of, the higher security.

Moreover, if you have use NE-201 for two or three years or more, and you want to switch to the newer and better ITE2 NAS. You may worry how to do with the old NE-201. Don’t worry! Because the NE-201 is equipped with the Windows 10 IoT Enterprise operating system, it can also be used as a standard computer. Let the elders and children use it. NE-201’s multi-purpose let users no longer have to worry about how to deal with old machines when they replaced it, sounds great, right?

Windows 10 NAS vs. Public Cloud? Which one is better?

Windows 10 NAS vs. Public Cloud?

There are various attacks on the Internet, for example, phishing, or ransomware. They are all designed to target users’ most valuable intangible assets in the computer.

Indeed, in this high-tech society, we all put our precious information on our mobile phone, or on the Internet. So data saving is important at this time. However, normally, when talks to backup, customer’s first perception are usually: “I only need to save my files in the online cloud service, and that’s done!”

Indeed, the online cloud services can provide the same service as Windows 10 NAS can provide. Online cloud services can upload files, backup photos, or create file sharing links. However, have you ever consider about the speed, terms of use, security, price, and so on? So let’s compare the cloud service with the Windows 10 NAS – NE-201 and see how the result goes! (This article will be divided into the part 1 and part 2; Part 1 will compare speed, cloud services terms and restrictions, security, and the Part 2 will be compared price and diversity.)

Windows 10 NAS vs. Public Cloud – Speed

If we just compare upload/download speed and ignore network routing materials or computer factors. We all know that when we are trying to connect public cloud services, we have to use the external network for file transmission. Normally, users installed their NE-201 at home or in the company. Although we have to transmit files to the NAS through the external network when we are not at home, when we return to our home or company, we can use the faster intranet for file transmission.

The speed of the external network and the internal network can be different from several times or more. If you want to back up all the files and data in the computer, it will take a while for those TB files to be transmitted over the Internet. However, time consumption can be saved a lot while you use the internal network to transmit files.

For example, we used a 716.8 MB file to test how much time does it takes to upload and download at the various public cloud storage services. Please refer to the following results.

Windows 10 NAS vs. Public Cloud?

(Note: The test result may be different due to the network environment difference)

Windows 10 NAS vs. Public Cloud – Restriction Rules

In recent years, we often heard public cloud news like public cloud terms replacement or the termination of storage services. The best news you can get is probably the rental fee may increase each year. The worst news may be the service is directly terminated and you have to download the files you have saved immediately and move those files to another place. Don’t forget the transfer speed I just mentioned. If you have stored more than 1 TB of files in total, how much time do you want on the downloading?

So, don’t you think that backup files on the public cloud just like letting the public cloud “kidnapped” our files? Therefore, why don’t you use ITE2 NE-201 to do the backup for your important files and save those files permanently? Doesn’t it feel better to control your files in your own hands, and no need to worry your files has to related to the public cloud!

Windows 10 NAS vs. Public Cloud?

Windows 10 NAS vs. Public Cloud – Security

In the past few years, there are lots of disputes related to cloud-based hard drives, for example, hackers, hardware damage and so on. All this problem has affected the rights and interests of many users.Windows 10 NAS vs. Public Cloud?

However, don’t worry, why not choose NE-201 to store your files. The NE-201 hardware is protected by the disk array mode and the system and data store in separate hardware. Therefore, if there’s any hardware damage occurs, NE-201 would have a corresponding mechanism to restore the data. No like a public cloud, you may lose everything and cannot restore the data.

Also, except to the general user login mechanism, NE-201 also applies the OAuth 2.0 mechanism for additional account authentication. The method can perform identity verification through a third party to reduce the hacker risk. If you would like to be safer, you can set NE-201 as a tool to back up all the home computer’s data. Moreover, directly restricts users can only access by the intranet. In that case, as long as you have good network usage habits, the data hacker risk will be lower.

Want to know more about Windows 10 NAS and public cloud differences?

Stay tuned and found out!

What do you need to set up static IP?

Please try to think on one situation, if you always log in to your ITE2 NAS by IP address 192.168.0.XX.

Somehow in someday, you cannot connect to your NAS by IP address anymore, but ITE2 NAS works fine like usual, what is happening?

It may cause by the reason for the network device doesn’t work, or it may be the reason that your IP address has changed.

Someone may ask, what causes the IP address changed?

It is because ITE2 NAS will use assign IP address automatically, but if device encounter network device or ITE2 NAS reboot, under these two factors, IP address may have a chance to re-assign.

To solve this problem, we only need to set up static IP for ITE2 NAS! Sounds easy, right?

For operation steps, please refer to the following post!

Set up Static IP in PDM

What can ITE2 NAS user do if they run out of storage space and want to upgrade capacity for their NAS?

Here comes a great and easy solution that user can do!

Under the RAID 1, 5, 10, and other modes like that, we can use [Add hot spare] function.

This function not only can replace the damaged hard drive but also can replace the original hard drive with a larger one.

Please refer to the following introduction for more information.

(Note: This function does not suitable for RAID 0 NAS).

Expand Space Size

In the RAID 1 type, take a hard drive out and press [Rescan Hardware Devices] You can see the status has become [Unsafe]. Replace a new hard drive (4TB hard drive in this demo) and click [Add hot spare].

For how to replace the hard drive, please refer to Replace damaged HDD in Windows 10 NAS

Wait until the system rebuild finish (rebuilding time may vary in different capacity).

System status will update [Good], then replace another hard drive by the same method.

When we are operating our Windows 10 NAS, if we want to reset system due to system display abnormal or slow, we can use the PDM interface system backup function.

Create a system backup first then restore the system if you need on the Windows 10 NAS desktop.

Moreover, system backup function can also restore all the PDM users and groups to the backup timing status.

So we highly recommend that Windows 10 NAS user should do the system backup after creating all the users and groups to avoid any system data loss.

For more information, please refer to the following system backup and restore introduction.

System Backup

1. Log in to ITE2 NAS PDM interface, select [Settings> System Management]

If Linux NAS has damaged HDD, what can we do to replace HDD?

Don’t worry! If Linux NAS is under RAID 1, 5, 10 modes, and encounter single hard drive display [Warning] status or the RAID mode display [Downgrade] status.

You can use PDM [Space Management> Create hot spare] function, then you can replace damaged hard drive and restore all the storage space.

For more details, please refer to the following introduction!

Review HDD Status

When we log in to PDM, if there’s a damaged hard drive, you will see the HDD status display [Warning] sign.

Replace HDD

Then, prepare a hard drive you want to replace, this hard drive’s capacity should be larger or equal to the smallest member capacity in RAID.

Click [Eject] to eject the hard drive display [Warning].

(Note: The replace hard drive do not need brand new one, but it cannot be the other RAID’s member. So we suggested user should format that hard drive before replacement).
